L'algorithme SEAL (Software Encryption Algorithm) est un algorithme alternatif à DES (Data Encryption Standard), 3DES (Triple DES) et AES (Advanced Encryption Standard). Le chiffrement SEAL utilise une clé de chiffrement de 160 bits et a un impact moindre sur le processeur par rapport à d'autres algorithmes logiciels. L'utilisation de l'ensemble de transformation esp-seal présente trois limites :
L'ensemble de transformation esp-seal ne peut être utilisé que si aucun accélérateur de chiffrement n'est présent. Cette limitation est présente parce qu'aucun accélérateur de chiffrement actuel n'implémente l'ensemble de transformation de chiffrement SEAL, et si un accélérateur de chiffrement est présent, il gérera toutes les connexions IPSec qui sont négociées avec IKE. Si un accélérateur de chiffrement est présent, le logiciel Cisco IOS autorise la configuration du jeu de transformation, mais il avertit qu'il ne sera pas utilisé tant que l'accélérateur de chiffrement est activé.
L'ensemble de transformation esp-seal ne peut être utilisé qu'en conjonction avec un ensemble de transformation d'authentification, à savoir l'un de ceux-ci : esp-md5-hmac, esp-sha-hmac, ah-md5-hmac ou ah-sha-hmac. Cette limitation est présente car le chiffrement SEAL est particulièrement faible lorsqu'il s'agit de protéger contre les modifications du paquet chiffré. Par conséquent, pour empêcher une telle faiblesse, un jeu de transformation d'authentification est nécessaire (les jeux de transformation d'authentification sont conçus pour déjouer de telles attaques). Si vous tentez de configurer un jeu de transformation IPSec à l'aide de SEAL sans jeu de transformation d'authentification, une erreur est générée et le jeu de transformation est rejeté.
Le jeu de transformation esp-seal ne peut pas être utilisé avec une carte de chiffrement à clé manuelle. Cette limitation est présente car une telle configuration réutiliserait le même flux de clés pour chaque redémarrage, ce qui compromettrait la sécurité. En raison du problème de sécurité, une telle configuration est interdite. Si vous tentez de configurer une crypto-carte à clé manuelle avec un jeu de transformation basé sur SEAL, une erreur est générée et le jeu de transformation est rejeté.
