VRRP versie 2 heeft alleen ondersteuning voor de IPv4 adresfamilie, maar VRRP versie 3 (VRRP3) heeft ondersteuning voor zowel IPv4 als IPv6 adresfamilies. Op NX-OS kunnen VRRP en VRRPv3 niet op hetzelfde apparaat worden ingeschakeld. Als de functie VRRP al is ingeschakeld op de Nexus switch, geeft het inschakelen van de functie VRRPv3 een foutmelding die aangeeft dat VRRPv2 al is ingeschakeld. Daarom moet een migratie van VRRP naar VRRPv3 worden uitgevoerd, wat een minimale impact op de diensten heeft.
