De configuraties van Frame Relay met point-to-point subinterfaces en Open Snelste pad (OSPF) als een routeringsprotocol dat hier wordt gebruikt, zijn specifiek voor deze installatie. De stappen voor het oplossen van problemen die worden getoond zijn echter algemener en kunnen worden gebruikt met verschillende configuraties zoals Frame Relay point-to-multipoint of een primaire verbinding met HDLC (High-Level Data Link Control) of Point to Point Protocol (PPP)-insluiting, ongeacht het routeringsprotocol dat wordt gebruikt.
Om de reservefunctionaliteit te verifiëren, is een van de interfaces op de Cisco 4500 router die als een switch van Frame Relay dienst doet in shutdown staat geplaatst om probleem binnen het netwerk van Frame Relay te simuleren.
