In deze voorbeeldconfiguratie ontvangt een externe PIX een IP-adres via Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) en sluit deze aan op een centrale PIX. Deze configuratie stelt de centrale PIX in staat dynamische IPsec-verbindingen te accepteren. PIX gebruikt Network Address Translate (NAT) om de particulier geadresseerde apparaten achter de projector aan te sluiten op het particulier geadresseerde netwerk achter de centrale PIX. PIX op afstand kan verbindingen naar de centrale PIX initiëren (hij weet het eindpunt), maar de centrale PIX kan geen verbindingen naar de afgelegen PIX initiëren (hij weet het eindpunt niet).
In deze voorbeeldconfiguratie is Tiger de afgelegen PIX en Leeuw de centrale PIX. Het is niet bekend wat het IP-adres van Tiger zal zijn, dus u moet Lion configureren om verbindingen dynamisch te accepteren vanuit elke willekeurige locatie met behulp van de wild-card, de vooraf gedeelde sleutel. Tiger weet wat er moet worden versleuteld (omdat de toegangslijst het bepaalt) en waar het leuneinde zich bevindt. Tiger moet de verbinding openen. Beide kanten doen NAT en nat 0 om NAT voor IPsec-verkeer te omzeilen.
Bovendien sluit de externe gebruiker in deze configuratie zich aan op de centrale PIX (Leeuw) met behulp van de Cisco VPN-client 3.x. De externe gebruiker kan geen verbinding maken met de externe PIX (Tiger) omdat beide kanten dynamisch IP-adressen toegewezen zouden hebben en niet wisten waar ze het verzoek moesten verzenden.
