此概念可基於頻寬管理。它也可以是一個空函式,接受所有頻寬更改請求。換句話說,如果閘道管理員允許或拒絕請求,則可以使用這些消息來管理頻寬,或者直接忽略這些請求。
由於頻寬限制,思科網守可以拒絕來自終端的呼叫。如果網守確定網路上沒有足夠的可用頻寬來支援呼叫,則會發生這種情況。當終端請求額外頻寬或報告用於呼叫的頻寬變化時,此功能也可在活動呼叫期間運行。
思科網守維護所有活動呼叫的記錄,以便管理其區域中的頻寬資源。在集群配置中,每設定的時間間隔交換網守更新協定(GUP)通知指示消息並攜帶關於區域的頻寬利用的資訊。此GUP消息交換允許備用網守正確管理單個區域的頻寬,即使網守在單獨的物理裝置中。
當您確定是否有足夠的頻寬來接受呼叫准入請求(ARQ)時,思科網守使用以下公式計算可用頻寬:
Available_bandwidth =(total_allocated_bandwidth)-(bandwidth_used_locally)-(bandwidth_used_by_all_alternates)。
如果可用頻寬足以進行呼叫,則返回准入確認(ACF),否則返回准入拒絕(ARJ)。
語音網關向Cisco Gatekeeper請求頻寬時,應考慮編解碼器、第2層封裝和壓縮功能,如壓縮RTP [cRTP]。有時,這些功能在呼叫建立時沒有定義,在這種情況下,可以在呼叫建立之後向網守發出頻寬更改請求,以便調整呼叫使用的頻寬量。

自Cisco IOS軟體版本12.3(1)起,可以在Cisco Gatekeeper上設定以下型別的區域頻寬限制:
本地區域和指定遠端區域之間的所有H.323流量的最大頻寬。如果需要,可以為每個遠端區域分別重複此配置。
本地區域中單個會話允許的最大頻寬,通常用於影片應用,而不是語音
允許集中到所有遠端區域的所有H.323流量的最大頻寬
新命令bandwidth check-destination在響應ARQ之前檢查目標終端頻寬。此命令是在Cisco IOS軟體版本12.3(1)中匯入。

這些配置的值用於處理ARQ和BRQ。
對於ARQ,Cisco Gatekeeper從適當的區域計數器和/或遠端計數器扣除消息中指定的頻寬。如果這會導致任何計數器變為負值,則呼叫會被拒絕,並會傳送一個ARJ響應,原因為ARJ_REQ_DENIED。如果呼叫請求超過此頻寬,思科網守將返回准入拒絕(ARJ)。
當BRQ請求增加頻寬時,思科網守會根據區域和/或遠端驗證請求。如果驗證失敗,則傳送BRJ響應,原因為BRJ_INSUFFICIENT_RSC和允許的最大頻寬量。

BRQ訊息用於要求思科閘道管理員變更頻寬。程式如下:
思科網守通過端點識別符號驗證請求,以便在註冊資料庫中找到端點。
它通過使用callReferenceValue查詢呼叫記錄,以查詢與具有相同callReferenceValue的端點關聯的呼叫。
如果找到呼叫記錄,則它會計算頻寬的變化,然後根據需要新增或減去全域性區域頻寬。它對所有正在使用的代理或網關資源執行相同的操作。
將BCF或BRJ消息傳送回終端,這取決於成功或失敗。
Information Request Response(IRR)「Non-Standard Data」欄位還攜帶有關網關或代理上當前使用的頻寬的資訊。
在Cisco H.323網關上的Cisco IOS軟體版本12.2(2)XA之前,總是報告呼叫以要求64 kbps的頻寬。這是Cisco G.711編解碼器的單向頻寬。如果呼叫中的終端選擇使用更有效的編解碼器,則不會向思科網守報告此情況。在符合H.323版本3的Cisco H.323網關或更高版本的Cisco IOS軟體版本12.2(2)XA中,報告的頻寬是雙向的。最初,保留128 kb。如果呼叫中的終端選擇更有效的編解碼器,思科網守將收到頻寬更改通知。
