This document explains the configurations necessary to implement T1 channel associated signaling (CAS).
Ensure that you meet these requirements before you attempt this configuration:
This document is based on Understanding How Digital T1 CAS (Robbed Bit Signaling) Works in IOS Gateways. Read this document to understand the various types of CAS signaling methods. This document also serves as a guide for configuring the different types of CAS signaling.
Before you implement E1 R2 signaling in a Cisco AS5300 router, check to ensure that your version of Cisco IOS® Software is compatible with the Cisco VCWare in the E1 module. If the versions are incompatible, the digital signal processor (DSP) modules in the voice card will not load and voice signal processing will not occur. See the Cisco VCWare Compatibility Matrix for the Cisco AS5300 to ensure that your versions are compatible.
Typically, if the version of Cisco VCWare is not compatible with the Cisco IOS Software, you can see this by entering the show vfc slot_number interface command as shown here:
5300#show vfc 1 interface Rx: in ptr 18, outptr 0 Tx: in ptr 14 outptr 14 0 in hw queue, 0 queue head , 0 queue tail Hardware is VFC out-of-band channel Interface : state RESET DSP instance (0x61048284) dsp_number 0, Channel ID 0 TX outstanding 0, max TX outstanding 0 Received 18 packets, 1087 bytes, 0 giant packets 0 drops, 0 no buffers, 0 input errors 121 bytes output, 14 frames output 0 bounce errors 0 DSP module 1 is not installed DSP module 2 is not installed DSP module 3 is not installed DSP module 4 is not installed DSP module 5 is not installed
In the output above, the "DSP module number is not installed" statements show that the versions are incompatible for that module number. An example of the DSP modules having the correct Cisco VCWare version loaded is shown here:
5300#show vfc 1 interface Rx: in ptr 24, outptr 0 TX: in ptr 15 outptr 15 0 in hw queue, 0 queue head , 0 queue tail Hardware is VFC out-of-band channel Interface : state RESET DSP instance (0x618C6088) dsp_number 0, Channel ID 0 TX outstanding 0, max TX outstanding 0 Received 283288 packets, 15864278 bytes, 0 giant packets 0 drops, 0 no buffers, 0 input errors 1416459 bytes output, 141647 frames output 0 bounce errors 0 Slot 1, DSPM 1 (C542), DSP 1, Channel 1 State RESET, DSP instance (0x61914BDC) TX outstanding 0, max TX outstanding 8 Received 0 packets, 0 bytes, 0 giant packets 0 drops, 0 no buffers, 0 input errors 0 bytes output, 0 frames output 0 bounce errors 0 Slot 1, DSPM 1 (C542), DSP 2, Channel 1 State RESET, DSP instance (0x6191510C) TX outstanding 0, max TX outstanding 8 Received 0 packets, 0 bytes, 0 giant packets 0 drops, 0 no buffers, 0 input errors 0 bytes output, 0 frames output 0 bounce errors 0
To check the installed Cisco VCWare version, enter the show vfc slot_number version vcware command as shown here:
5300#show vfc 1 version vcware Voice Feature Card in Slot 1: VCware Version : 4.10 ROM Monitor Version : 1.2 DSPware Version : Technology : C542
Note: Make sure the Cisco VCWare technology version (c549 or c542) matches the installed Voice Feature Card DSP technology (DSPM-542: single-density voice support, or DSPM-549: high-density voice support).

The information in this document was created from the devices in a specific lab environment. All of the devices used in this document started with a cleared (default) configuration. If your network is live, make sure that you understand the potential impact of any command.
Refer to Cisco Technical Tips Conventions for more information on document conventions.
In this section, you are presented with the information to configure the features described in this document.
Note: Use the Command Lookup Tool (registered customers only) to find more information on the commands used in this document.
To run CAS signaling on Cisco 2600/3600 series routers, a High Density Voice Network Module (NM-HDV) is required.
The command ds0-group (or cas-group, depending on the Cisco IOS version) needs to be defined on the T1 controllers (Cisco AS5xxx and 2600/3600 routers).
Use this procedure to configure CAS:
Set up the T1 controller connected to the private automatic branch exchange (PBX) or switch. Ensure that the framing and line coding of the T1 are properly set.
T1 framing: ESF or SF
T1 line coding: B8ZS or AMI
T1 clock source: internal or line
Note: Keep in mind that different PBXs have different requirements on the clock source.
Use this command sequence to define your line signaling on AS5xxx platforms:
5300(config)#controller T1 0 5300(config-controller)# ds0-group 1 timeslots 1-24 type ? e&m-fgb E & M Type II FGB e&m-fgd E & M Type II FGD e&m-immediate-start E & M Immediate Start fgd-eana FGD Exchange Access North American fgd-os FGD Operator Services fxs-ground-start FXS Ground Start fxs-loop-start FXS Loop Start none Null Signaling for External Call Control r1-itu R1 ITU sas-ground-start SAS Ground Start sas-loop-start SAS Loop Start <cr>
Note: If you want to collect Dialed Number Identification Service (DNIS) information on a T1 controller, you must manually configure it on the access server. To collect dual tone multifrequency (DTMF) DNIS for E&M-fgb under a controller T1 configuration, use the ds0-group 0 timeslots 1-24 type e&m-fgb dtmf dnis command. To collect multifrequency (MF) DNIS for E&M-fgb, use the ds0-group 0 timeslots 1-24 type e&m-fgb mf dnis command.
Use this command sequence to define your line signaling on Cisco 2600/3600 platforms:
3600(config)#controller T1 0 3600(config-controller)# ds0-group 1 timeslots 1-24 type ? e&m-delay-dial E & M Delay Dial e&m-fgd E & M Type II FGD e&m-immediate-start E & M Immediate Start e&m-wink-start E & M Wink Start ext-sig External Signaling fgd-eana FGD-EANA BOC side fxo-ground-start FXO Ground Start fxo-loop-start FXO Loop Start fxs-ground-start FXS Ground Start fxs-loop-start FXS Loop Start none Null Signaling for External Call Control <cr>
With Cisco IOS Software release 11.3, the command sequence is as follows.
peggy(config)#controller T1 0 peggy(config-controller)#cas-group 1 timeslot 1-15 type ? ...
Note: If you upgrade from Cisco IOS Software release 11.3 to release 12.0, the new command will replace the old one automatically.

There is currently no verification procedure available for this configuration.
This section provides information you can use to troubleshoot your configuration.
Follow these instructions to troubleshoot your configuration. Refer to E1 R2 Customization with the cas-custom Command for additional information on troubleshooting.
Verify that the T1 controller 0 is up. If it is down, check the framing, line coding, clock source, alarms, replace the cable, reseat the card, and so forth and so on.
If you are using a Cisco AS5300, check that the DSPs are correctly installed with the show vfc slot number interface command.
For FGD trunks configure direct inward dial (DID) on the plain old telephone service (POTS) peer, so that the received digits are used to choose an outgoing peer.
Note: On the Cisco AS5300 you will need to have the "dnis" option configured to request DNIS.
Turn on some of the debug commands shown in the following section and study the outputs
Check for communication between the router and PBX or switch.
Is the line seized?
Does the router receive/send digits?
Find out which side is clearing the call.
If possible, use the latest Cisco IOS Software releases available on Cisco.com.
Determining your Signaling on a Cisco AS5xxx Router
It can be difficult determining what type of signaling you have by looking at the debugs of a router. However, it is possible to make a good guess as to what the signaling should be. The following debug is fairly reliable (especially when all the channels are idle) in determining the type of signaling. It is recommended that you first verify your signaling through these debugs since they can catch the most common and not-so-obvious provisioning mistakes. As usual, exercise caution when turning debugs on in the router. It is recommended that you do not enable debugging unless you are familiar with its functionalities. Be aware that not all debugs are available for every network access server (NAS) platform.
The Output Interpreter Tool (registered customers only) (OIT) supports certain show commands. Use the OIT to view an analysis of show command output.
Note: Refer to Important Information on Debug Commands before you use debug commands.
