Call routing encompasses getting a placed call from one endpoint to another through the network. Decisions in call routing can be made for many reasons including least cost (toll bypass), least congestion, time of day, day of week, etc.
The dial plan; international or a national, is an addressing method defined by the network administrator. Having entered a telephone number into the network, the components in the network determine the route each call takes to reach the called party. The path selected is influenced by a range of factors, such as time of day, congestion, round trip delays or path cost. Intelligent devices in the network select the most appropriate route based on these factors.
