Howard Jones
Director of Human Networks The Eden Project
Howard is responsible for leading the social, human and community development agenda for Eden, including its evolution as a social business. He has played a key role in the organisational and ICT development of projects specifically designed to provide Eden with the scope, authority and scale it needs to have a global educational and social impact.
During his time at Eden, Howard has managed a variety of projects including Project Leader Live 8 – Africa Calling and Project Leader – The City State, a detailed investigation of Eden’s resource procurement, allocation and management as a sustainable model for regional development.
Howard is now working on creating Living Networks, a very large networked social business that will host programmes such as Growing for Life (offender skills and livelihoods), Gardens for Life (global schools programme), World Build Space (collaboration in 3D web environment for intelligent and decent built space) and others in the domain of social justice, inclusion, regeneration and prosperity.
Prior to joining The Eden Project Howard was a military officer. His others interests and activities include: Board Director, Community Energy Plus and Cornwall Sustainable Energy Partnership; Board Director, Barnfield Academies; Trustee BUILD (Building Understanding through International Links for Development); Managing Director, World Arts Space; Fellow Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts and Member of RedR/IHE (Register of Engineers for Disaster Relief/International Health Exchange).
He has also been involved in the University of Cambridge’ Climate Programme and has contributed to Cisco’s Connected Urban Development programme and Public Sector Summit, Nobel Prize event, 2008.
Dan Hill
Senior Consultant Arup
Dan Hill has been working at the forefront of innovative information and communications technology since the early '90s and has been responsible for many innovative, popular and critically acclaimed products and services.
Dan was one of the key architects of a BBC redesign for the on-demand media age and was in charge of design strategy across the BBC's websites, and design lead on the iPlayer product. Dan was also Director of Web & Broadcast for the ground-breaking global media product Monocle, organised the architecture and urbanism conference Postopolis in New York, and runs City of Sound, generally acclaimed as one of the leading architecture and urbanism websites. He now works for the multinational design consultancy Arup in Sydney, as a senior consultant in their urban planning and design group, leading their work in the emerging field of urban informatics and urban information design. He also has a background of academic research and practice in urban regeneration through creative industries and ICT, working in Manchester in the mid-'90s.
Arup is a global firm of designers, engineers, planners and business consultants providing a diverse range of professional services to clients around the world. As one of the largest and most successful international design consultancies in the world, Arup has around 10000 staff working in 86 offices in more than 37 countries, with over 10000 projects running concurrently at any one time. Arup has three main global business areas – buildings, infrastructure and consulting – although a multi-disciplinary approach means that any given project may involve people from any or all of the sectors or regions in which they operate. It was founded in Britain by the engineer/philosopher Ove Arup in 1946.
Andy Murdoc,
Group Director for Infrastructure Buro Happold
Andy is a civil/urban engineer with 20 years experience in infrastructure design, urban master planning and transportation engineering.
Born and educated in South Africa, Andy Murdoch joined Buro Happold eight years ago and is currently Group Director for Infrastructure in the practice’s London office. He has played a key role in enhancing the group's capabilities in responding to complex urban and civil engineering challenges. The Infrastructure group adopts an integrated approach to tackle complex urban challenges across the full planning spectrum, taking into account the physical, economic, social and environmental factors that may affect a successful outcome.
During his time at Buro Happold, Andy has worked on several high profile projects including the Greenwich Peninsula regeneration, the redevelopment of Ascot Racecourse, the Summer Row development (Wolverhampton), the redevelopment of the area around Wembley Stadium and Convoy’s Wharf (Lewisham, London). International work includes projects such as Al Ain (Abu Dhabi) and Tehsil Derabasi (Chandigarh, India).
He is currently leading the consultancy’s work on the Edinburgh Harbour masterplan and is playing a key role in promoting Buro Happold’s international masterplanning activities.
Ken Shuttleworth
Founder Make Architects
Ken Shuttleworth is the founder of Make architects. Founded in 2004, this studio of highly creative architects and designers is committed to designing buildings, spaces and places which are as striking and innovative as they are socially, economically and environmentally responsible and has already established itself as one of the UK’s foremost architectural firms.
Make’s first building, the award-winning Dartford Dojo, was completed in 2006, while recently-completed projects include the St Paul’s Information Centre in the City of London, the 55 Baker Street office development in central London and three striking new buildings for the University of Nottingham’s Jubilee Campus. Schemes now under construction include The Cube in Birmingham and two new residential buildings within the Grosvenor Waterside development in London. Other major projects currently underway worldwide range from product design to urban masterplans, embracing office, residential, healthcare, sport and civic buildings of all scales.
Prior to founding Make, Ken was a Partner at Foster and Partners, where he worked on some of the most iconic and ground-breaking buildings in the world. He joined the practice in 1977, moving to Hong Kong in 1979 to oversee the design and construction of the Hongkong Shanghai Bank. Returning to the UK in 1986, he proceeded to build up a remarkable portfolio of experience over the following decades. The projects he worked on during this time include the Carré d’Art in Nîmes, the ITN building in London, Cranfield University Library, Hong Kong’s Chek Lap Kok airport, the Al Faisaliah development in Riyadh, the Millennium Bridge in London, 30 St Mary Axe (the Swiss Re tower) in the City of London and London’s City Hall.
Ken was appointed a CABE Commissioner in 2002 and in 2004 was made a Chair of the CABE Design Review panel. He currently chairs CABE’s school design review panel.
Femi Adewole
Investment Director Notting Hill Housing
Femi Adewole is a chartered surveyor and graduate of the Warwick Business School. He comes to Notting Hill Housing from The Guinness Trust where he held the position of Investment Director for three years. Before then, he was Executive Director at the Bradford Community Housing Trust Group, where he delivered improved services for residents; and Director of Regeneration and Community Development at the Bedfordshire Pilgrims Housing Association. Previous roles also include senior development roles at Hyde Housing Association.
Femi’s housing career spans 20 years experience of development and regeneration within some well regarded associations. His values are very much aligned with those of Notting Hill, being very community focused and founded on a belief that housing associations are about so much more than managing homes and building new ones.
Femi is also a non-executive director of West Hertfordshire Primary Care Trust.
