Document Objectives
This guide describes how to install the Cisco Secure PIX Firewall hardware and software components.
Audience
This guide is for network administrators who perform any of the following tasks:
•Managing network security
•Installing and configuring firewalls
•Managing default and static routes, and TCP and UDP services
Use this guide with documentation supplied in the PIX Firewall unit's accessory kit.
Document Organization
This guide includes the following chapters:
•"Introduction" describes requirements and safety information.
•"Installing a PIX Firewall" describes hardware installation, features, and how to connect network cables to a PIX 506, PIX 515, PIX 520, PIX 525, and earlier models. This chapter also contains startup software configuration information.
•"Installing Failover" describes how to install the optional failover feature.
•"Installing the PIX Firewall Syslog Server (PFSS)" describes how to install the PIX Firewall Syslog Server (PFSS) on a Windows NT system.
•"Opening a PIX Firewall Chassis" describes how to open the chassis for the PIX 515, PIX 520, PIX 525, PIX 510, and the earlier models. This chapter also describes how to replace the battery on the motherboard.
•"Installing a Memory Upgrade" describes how to install additional system DIMM or SIMM RAM memory.
•"Installing a Circuit Board" describes how to install an interface circuit board (also known as a "card"), such as an Ethernet, Token Ring, or FDDI board, and a Flash memory board.
•"Installing a DC Voltage PIX 515 or PIX 520" describes how to install a DC voltage PIX Firewall unit.
•"Installing the PIX Firewall Setup Wizard," describes how to install a software tool that simplifies the PIX Firewall installation if you have a Windows system you can connect to the PIX Firewall to run the PIX Firewall Setup Wizard software.
Document Conventions
Command descriptions use these conventions:
•Braces ({ }) indicate a required choice.
•Square brackets ([ ]) indicate optional elements.
•Vertical bars ( | ) separate alternative, mutually exclusive elements.
•Boldface indicates commands and keywords that are entered literally as shown.
•Italics indicate arguments for which you supply values.
Examples use these conventions:
•Examples depict screen displays and the command line in screen font.
•Information you need to enter in examples is shown in boldface screen font.
•Variables for which you must supply a value are shown in italic screen font.
Graphic user interface access uses these conventions:
•Boldface indicates buttons and menu items.
•Selecting a menu item (or screen) is indicated by the following convention:
Click Start >Settings>Control Panel.
Note Means reader take note. Notes contain helpful suggestions or references to material not covered in the manual.

Cisco TAC Website
The Cisco TAC website (http://www.cisco.com/tac) provides online documents and tools for troubleshooting and resolving technical issues with Cisco products and technologies. The Cisco TAC website is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Opening a TAC Case
The online TAC Case Open Tool (http://www.cisco.com/tac/caseopen) is the fastest way to open P3 and P4 cases. (Your network is minimally impaired or you require product information). After you describe your situation, the TAC Case Open Tool automatically recommends resources for an immediate solution. If your issue is not resolved using these recommendations, your case will be assigned to a Cisco TAC engineer.
For P1 or P2 cases (your production network is down or severely degraded) or if you do not have Internet access, contact Cisco TAC by telephone. Cisco TAC engineers are assigned immediately to P1 and P2 cases to help keep your business operations running smoothly.

TAC Case Priority Definitions
To ensure that all cases are reported in a standard format, Cisco has established case priority definitions.
Priority 1 (P1)—Your network is "down" or there is a critical impact to your business operations. You and Cisco will commit all necessary resources around the clock to resolve the situation.
Priority 2 (P2)—Operation of an existing network is severely degraded, or significant aspects of your business operation are negatively affected by inadequate performance of Cisco products. You and Cisco will commit full-time resources during normal business hours to resolve the situation.
Priority 3 (P3)—Operational performance of your network is impaired, but most business operations remain functional. You and Cisco will commit resources during normal business hours to restore service to satisfactory levels.
Priority 4 (P4)—You require information or assistance with Cisco product capabilities, installation, or configuration. There is little or no effect on your business operations.
